Old Hawaii on Horseback

  • Waikii Ranch Polo Field 67-1026 Palekaiko Road Waimea, HI, 96743 United States (map)

10 a.m.-1 p.m., Sat., Sept. 14, 2019. Waiki’i Ranch Polo Grounds. This re-creation of this priceless pageant that tells the story of our paniolo heritage with more than 60 riders on horseback will culminate an 18-month celebration by PPS honoring Na Wahine Holo Lio — the unheralded mothers, wives, grandmothers, great grandmothers, sisters, aunts and even Hawai’i monarchs such as Queen Emma and Princess Ka’iulani who contributed so significantly to the nearly 170-plus-year-old ranching legacy of Hawai’i. Entertainer John Cruz will open the event from 10-11, followed by magnificently costumed riders on horseback – many of them among the state’s most accomplished horsemen and horsewomen – depicting historic moments in the state’s ranching history – from the arrival of the first cattle and horses forward to a glimpse of ranching life today. Tickets $30 in advance; $35 at the gate. Free for children 12 and under. Advance sales online – go to www.PanioloPreservation.org. This is an alcohol and drug-free event; no coolers please but there will be food and beverage vendors. Info: 808-769-2512.
