I am distressed that one more inroad has been made toward the "Californiazation" of Waimea's formerly desirable lifestyle. Added traffic, on an already overloaded and narrow roadway, coupled with the removal of greenery and an additional glut of asphalt and concrete, will only detract from the surroundings and create a dismal localized climate. Consider the actual temperature changes that occur when these islands of heat-exchanging surfaces stand side-by-side with no green spaces between. I ask that the overall plan be carefully considered to include a maximum number of trees and shrubs left standing, or added, to allow for this effect. The Outdoor Circle should, indeed, be involved in this planning as well as any other.

The Signage on this building looks too large. They could probably cut a couple of feet off the top of the building if it were reduced to meet code.

I have been disappointed in the follow-through concerning trees and shrubbery by a number of the large stores we have permitted over the years.

The most recent example is Lex Brodies which we specifically requested that they leave the row of trees fronting Pukalani which were not on the building site. Instead the contractor unnecessarily removed the trees and later installed a few twigs which now after several years are only a few feet high. And Lex Brodies uses an air inflated rubber manikin which looks horrible and adds nothing to the community. This abortion should long ago have brought the wrath of the Out Door Circle on their head.

Once these off island companies get their permit, the only concern is the bottom line.

Sincerely
David B. Gomes

TOPIC: Kawaihae By-pass Road Extension
I hope someone can help me here. I am a home owner (almost 2 yrs) in Kawaihae Village. We are such an easily over-looked, tiny community when it comes to issues like this and I am trying real hard to get current info on what route is being favored, or has been chosen for the Kawaihae by-pass road extension. The largest concern here is that there will be a truck route slapped back behind the property (in the Parker Ranch area), which would then have us all boxed in between the current Kawaihae Road, with its loud traffic and a new road, which will favor the heavy trucking that goes on from the harbor. The noise of the current traffic, that is either braking coming down the hill, or reving-up to go up the hill, is pretty disruptive in this mostly quiet place. I'm sure EIS studies have been done, but no one came the KV and asked about the real noise impact. I have found it difficult to get any info on the route and would be most appreciative for any and all help.
Mahalo in advance. J. Mara

To the Commander of Pohakaloa Training Area,
I live in Waimea near the center of town. Now and in the recent past our town has been subjected to overflights by a military helicopter.
At first I thought that maybe this was because of an emergency. But it is obvious now that your choppers are using our airspace to practice.
Please discontinue using our skies for this purpose. It is more than a little disturbing and it is entirely unnecessary. There are plenty of other, less populated, areas that can be used for this purpose.

Not only is the sound nerve racking but there is also the possibility of one of these pilots crashing into our populated residential ares.
As into my home!!! We are not a battle ground or war zone. Please do not treat us like some third world country population.
Leave our skies and let us live in peace.

The whole idea of a military is to allow civilian home populations to live in peace and safety. We have no peace with these chopper overflights. We have no security thinking that they could crash.

Practice over unpopulated areas. You have several thousand acres that you lease for this purpose. Use them.
Thank You,
Tom Beach
