WCA Town Meeting on Thursday, 9/15, to Consider New Longs Drugs Store in Waimea

On May 18, Longs Drug received Final Plan Approval for a store to be constructed on Kawaihae Road, between Hale Ola Pono and Parker Square. Due to an oversight, the Planning Department did not forward the plan approval application information to the Waimea Community Association’s Planning and Design Review Committee prior to its issuance of a plan approval. When it was discovered that the community association had not provided comments, Planning staff placed a ‘hold’ on the sign off for the construction plans to allow for additional time.
Members of the community will have an opportunity to comment on these plans when representatives of Longs present their plans at the next meeting of the Waimea Community Association, which will be held on Thursday, September 15. This meeting is in place of our usual first Thursday of the month meeting. The association’s Planning and Design Review Committee will not hold a separate meeting to consider Longs’ proposal. The meeting will be conducted under the procedures normally followed by the Design Review Committee. Meeting time is 5:15 p.m. and the location is the school cafeteria.

The Signage on this building looks too large. They could probably cut a couple of feet off the top of the building if it were reduced to meet code.
I have been disappointed in the follow-through concerning trees and shrubbery by a number of the large stores we have permitted over the years.
The most recent example is Lex Brodies which we specifically requested that they leave the row of trees fronting Pukalani which were not on the building site. Instead the contractor unnecessarily removed the trees and later installed a few twigs which now after several years are only a few feet high. And Lex Brodies uses an air inflated rubber manikin which looks horrible and adds nothing to the community. This abortion should long ago have brought the wrath of the Out Door Circle on their head.
Once these off island companies get their permit, the only concern is the bottom line.
Sincerely
David B. Gomes
I am distressed that one more inroad has been made toward the “Californiazation” of Waimea’s formerly desirable lifestyle. Added traffic, on an already overloaded and narrow roadway, coupled with the removal of greenery and an additional glut of asphalt and concrete, will only detract from the surroundings and create a dismal localized climate. Consider the actual temperature changes that occur when these islands of heat-exchanging surfaces stand side-by-side with no green spaces between. I ask that the overall plan be carefully considered to include a maximum number of trees and shrubs left standing, or added, to allow for this effect. The Outdoor Circle should, indeed, be involved in this planning as well as any other.
It’s about time.
